Brrr~! The weather is getting cold and where I am in Washington, the snow its sure to be on its way! As I was layering up this morning (my favorite knee-high knit socks!) I started to think about how the cold weather will affect my dogs…

My dogs are larger (both over 80+ lbs.!), so I know jackets are not a necessity* but there are still a few winter tips that are important to keep in mind for pets of all breeds and sizes –

{*Smaller dogs are often seen sporting jackets and sweaters not just for fashion but for warmth!! Many small dogs or pets with short hair, will often need additional layers if you live in an extra cool climate! Next time yougrab your scarf for your walk with Fido, make sure you’ve got something to keep your pup from shivering too!}

->Just like in the summertime, never leave your dog in the car during freezing or near-freezing temperatures! This could cause your pup to freeze or get sick!

->During the winter, make sure your dog is getting enough *protein* in its diet, which can help increase its warm, fur coat! Protein can help be a natural boost in keeping your dogs coat full and healthy.

->Wipe your dogs paws clean when coming in from snow or cold, wet weather.  This can help your dog from not just getting sick from being too cold or damp, but also, can keep your pup from possibly ingesting harmful (but common) wintertime chemicals – like antifreeze or road salt.
