Benefits of Dog Walking

Everyone needs exercise and, despite how much they already move, your dogs still need their daily dose of exercise. A walk can benefit both you and pup in several ways:

allieanddogsonhike*Instant endorphin boost: Even 10 minutes can uplift your attitude by releasing endorphins and put both you and pup in a better mood!

*Healthy heart: Walking is an excellent source of exercise to strengthen your heart – at any pace you walk or run, you’ll be benefiting your body

*Lower stress: Walking provides a positive outlook for energy and lowers stress – helping to prevent your dog from destructive behavior and lower pet separation anxiety

*Socialization and relationship bonding: Dogs are to ail animals and enjoy the outgoing activity of walking or jogging. Leash training can also strengthen your bond between you and your four-legged friend.

How to Switch Types of Cat Litter

I posted before that I’ve switched over to using a new brand of cat litter, Swheat Scoop, and now I thought I’d post a related how-to. Switching cat litter can seem like you’re taking a risk – what if you’re cat doesn’t like it? What if they just refuse to use it?

There are several helpful steps you can take to make the transition as easy as possible. By taking these steps you’re cats can switch litter brands without even noticing or being bothered by drastic change in their environment.image

*Pay attention to your pet – You know your cats habits and level of comfort with change. Some cats may only take a week to transition, others longer. Some cats might not need any transition time – my two cats, 2 years old and 10 years, neither one had issues transitioning from clay cat litter to a natural brand.

*Start by mixing the new litter in with your current brand.

*Over the course of one-two weeks, transition your cat from one type of litter to the next. This is the key to your cat using the new litter – often times a drastic change with no transition can lead to an unhappy cat and an unused litter box.

->Don’t forget-When pure transitioning two different kinds of litter, neither one will be working to its full potential. Which means extra cleaning! Once you’re cat has switched over to the new litter fully, it will be able to work to its full potential.

How-to: Trim Dogs Nails

A quick trim is important for your pups grooming routine and if you want to save some $ then you can follow a few steps to trim your dogs nails at home!

Some dogs naturally “trim” their own nails by enoughhard-surface contact, while others need some help to keep nails at a comfortable length.

#1 priority is making sure both you and your dog are comfortable and confident about the whole ordeal – while it is quick and painless for your dog, they can often be squeamish to a new noise/sensation but make sure you stay focused and steady!

Watch the video below for a great demo on trimming your dogs nails with both clippers and a grinder. (Video previously posted by SceneItB4 on YouTube)

->Remember, if you have a young puppy, trimming its nails now can get it more comfortable and used to the experience. With all things in pet training, even like walking on a leash or riding in the car, it can take time, patience and practice!

QUESTION: Do you trim your dogs nails or bring your dog to a groomer?  Leave your answer below in theComments!

**Personally, even though both of my dogs are calm enough to stand for me trimming their nails, I opt not to trim either one!  My Weimaraner, Buddy, gets plenty of running and has always managed to have well-manicured nails. While my lab mix Lily, on occasion will get a quick trim from me, but generally only needs a trim about every 6 months and then I choose to pay the $5 at the local groomer. 😉

Potty-Training Puppies with Bells

My pup was pretty quick to potty train but I couldn’t have done it without the help of my training bell! What a simple solution, it actually started because of myfront door decor!

Training Door Bells (CanineKingdomOK, $15+)

I had a string of colorful, stuffed fishies with a gold bell on the end-  Before I knew it, after only about a week of house-training, my dog – the young pup, was “ringing the bell” instinctively when he pawed at the door.  It must have realized the ringing got my attention and I realized I had found my solution to indoor accidents!

il_570xN.352250810EcoDog Blog, as always, has found a few handmade & eco-friendly options when it comes to training bells. If you’re trying totrain a young pup or troublesome dog, I would highly recommend adding a doggie bell to your door!
il_570xN.726093023_tlns->I guess if you really want to get down to it…house-training your pup faster can save you paper towels/cleaning products, and ultimately, keeps you on track to staying green!!
